Recently, one shiny red big truck is showcasing itself on Beijing’s main road, including Third Ring road, Second Ring road and Chang’an Street. Pedestrians stopped and stood along the road to watch the Big Guy stream through the busy traffic. What is so different about the truck that made people cast their eyes to it.

Let’s first take a look at the road behind it. One shiny and spotless black asphalt concrete road comes into our view as if it is newly-built, a steep contrast to pavement beside it. Permeable gap and ballast is clear and distinctive. The white and yellow line marker appeared to be just painted, we have got some bystanders put their hands on the road to check if it is clear with no dust.
 

The aformentioned scenario is BESG’s (Beijing Environment Sanitation Engineering Group) road sweeping operation.It is a deep cleaning process aimed at restoring the original function of the road. As we all know, an increasing number of vehicles are on urban road, and as a result a lot of dust and particles hidden in the gap between the roads. Tyres absorb and carry with them large quantity of dust particles smaller than PM10, then gradually release into the atmosphere, result in air pollution; the remianing large particles gradually hardened and blocked the original gap of asphalt road, making the road less permeable and unable to absorb road noise and in the stormy seasons, increases the pressure on urban drainage system. At present, the unban road appears to be very clean. In fact, there is large number of hidden pollutants; traditional road sweeper can only clean up the dusts on the surface while the pollutants deep within the gap remains.
 

During the 2008 Beijing Olympic, advanced road sweeping vechicles were imported to clean main roads and streets near and around the Olympic stadiums. So improved air quality and clear blue sky can be seen every day during the Game. The IOC chairman praised China for hosting a fabulous Olympic Games. Efforts to promote the application of this equipment discontinued due to high prices.
